There is no healthcare in the rural villages of Darfur, Sudan. Mothers give birth with help only from the Traditional Birth Attenders who are not trained and have no equipment. Kids for Kids has trained two midwives for each of our 110 villages, saving the lives of countless mothers and babies; ensuring safe practices during pregnancy, childbirth, & postpartum. We are raising funds to train new midwives for additional villages as soon as it is safe to do so.
Mortality of women and babies in villages in Darfur is amongst the highest in the world. There is no healthcare in villages and women have to rely on Traditional Birth Attenders who use 'rope delivery' when there is obstructed labour. They have had no training even in basic hygiene. Female genital mutilation is a common practice in Darfur, and obstruction often prevents natural birth. Families also lack even the basic essentials such as blankets and mosquito nets to keep children safe.
This project will help us train more midwives - a 14 month training in basic hygiene, ante & post-natal care, immunization, nutrition, and anti-FGM. All our midwives receive a midwifery kit, a strong cross-bred donkey for reaching mothers quickly in an emergency, a Solar Lantern for night deliveries, a pair of leather sandals to protect their feet from the burning sand, and a mobile phone. Help us raise funds now so we can resume training just as soon as their is stability in Darfur.
Training midwives in rural villages reduces the number of deaths of mothers in childbirth through modern birth techniques, early referral of problem cases, and better spacing of births. Infants and young children will be healthier, better nourished and immunized against deadly diseases. Midwives teach mothers about childcare, ensuring children are given the best chance of survival. Right now, amid the crisis in Sudan, our midwives are saving lives as all other medical care has collapsed.
