In June, the Children’s Legal Defense Center (CLDC) supported 51 new cases involving children and youth in conflict with the law. Of these, 50 were under the age of 18, including 10 children aged 14 or younger—a stark reminder of the vulnerability of minors in the justice system. Only 1 intake involved a young adult (18/19), and no adults were processed, reflecting our focused mission to defend children’s rights.
Thanks to sustained legal advocacy and community engagement:
17 children and youth were released, 8 of them through customary mediation, which remains a vital tool in reducing incarceration.
11 were convicted, but 7 of those received reduced sentences, including 6 juveniles and 1 young adult.
Your support is helping us provide critical legal aid, reduce harmful detention, and work with communities to find restorative justice solutions. Every release and every sentence reduction is a step toward a more humane and just system for Somaliland’s children.
Thank you for standing with us.
