Delay Marriage Promote Schooling for Ugandan Girls

Joy for Children Uganda (JFCU) is committed to ensuring the rights and well-being of vulnerable children, particularly girls, in Uganda. This report highlights the critical importance of keeping girls in school as a key strategy to eradicate child marriage and promote gender equality. We appeal to donors to support our efforts to empower girls through education and create a future where every girl can fulfill her potential.

Child marriage remains a pervasive issue in Uganda, with devastating consequences for girls' health, education, and future prospects. According to UNICEF, 40% of girls in Uganda are married before the age of 18, denying them their rights to education, health, and autonomy. Child marriage perpetuates a cycle of poverty, perpetuates gender inequality, and undermines efforts to achieve sustainable development.

Education is a powerful tool for preventing child marriage and empowering girls to make informed choices about their lives. When girls stay in school, they are less likely to be married early, more likely to delay childbearing, and more likely to achieve economic independence. Education provides girls with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to assert their rights, pursue their aspirations, and contribute to their communities.

Joy for Children Uganda is committed to keeping girls in school and creating a supportive environment where they can thrive. Our programs focus on:

Providing scholarships and educational support to vulnerable girls, enabling them to access and stay in school.

Implementing comprehensive sexuality education and life skills training to empower girls with knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their bodies, health, and relationships.

Engaging with parents, communities, and local leaders to challenge harmful gender norms and practices that perpetuate child marriage and promote gender equality.

We are thrilled to provide an update on the profound impact of Joy for Children Uganda (JFCU) on the Nyabuswa Parents  Safe Space. This initiative, pioneered by JFCU, has evolved into a nurturing environment where peers gather to empower one another, foster learning, and create positive change within their community.

Every Saturday, young girls and boys convene at the safe space, engaging in activities aimed at enhancing their knowledge, skills, and resilience. One notable initiative that has emerged is the Gifting Project and Saving Program. Through this program, participants have not only received essential items such as cups, blankets, and plates but have also cultivated a culture of financial literacy and resourcefulness.

One inspiring success story from the Nyabuswa Safe Space is that of Catherine, a resilient young girl who, despite facing the loss of her father at an early age and having to drop out of school, has emerged as a peer leader within the community. Catherine's journey exemplifies the transformative power of resilience and community support. Through the safe space, Catherine has received invaluable support, including gifts and resources that have significantly improved her quality of life. Moreover, Catherine's participation in the saving program has enabled her to purchase two goats and cultivate two gardens, securing a sustainable source of income for herself and her family.

Beyond tangible benefits, the Nyabuswa Safe Space serves as a platform for education and awareness on critical issues such as child marriages, teenage pregnancies, behavior change, and positive parenting. Through interactive sessions and peer discussions, young girls and boys have been equipped with knowledge and skills to navigate these challenges and advocate for their rights.

Crucially, the safe space provides a judgment-free environment where survivors of teenage pregnancies can share their stories openly, fostering empathy, support, and healing within the community.

One of the most significant aspects of the Nyabuswa Safe Space is the culture of peer learning and collaboration it fosters. Participants learn not only from structured activities but also from one another, exchanging experiences, insights, and skills that contribute to their personal growth and development.
