Clean Water for Goma's Hospitals and Children

By AGIZO JOSUE | CORDINATOR

1. Background and Rationale

The city of Goma, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has faced a severe lack of access to safe drinking water for many years. Volcanic soil, combined with inadequate infrastructure, prevents thousands of families from accessing clean water. Households often rely on rainwater or unprotected sources, exposing children and patients to high risks of waterborne diseases.
Hospitals, schools, health centers, and orphanages experience this reality daily: lack of water for handwashing, wound cleaning, meal preparation, and basic hygiene.

2. Project Description

The project “Deliver Clean Water to Goma's Hospitals & Kids” aims to provide more than one million liters of clean drinking water to the most vulnerable facilities in Goma.
Using water tanker trucks, water is delivered directly to beneficiary sites and stored in secure tanks. Deliveries are carried out several times a week to ensure continuous availability for drinking, cooking, and sanitation.

3. Beneficiaries

  • Hospitals and health centers
  • Primary and secondary schools
  • Orphanages
  • Children, patients, healthcare staff, and surrounding communities

Thousands of people benefit directly and indirectly from this life-saving service.

4. Project Objectives

  • Reduce diseases linked to unsafe water
  • Improve hygiene and the quality of healthcare services
  • Promote school attendance among children
  • Strengthen institutional resilience to the water crisis

5. Progress and Partnership

The total project budget is estimated at USD 12,000.
To date, USD 51 has already been raised, thanks to collaboration with the GlobalGiving platform, a key partner that enhances our credibility and international visibility.
This partnership gives us confidence that, with continued donor engagement, the financial goal will be achieved.

The project is currently in the preparatory phase, including the identification of trainers and community learners involved in water management and awareness activities.
Operational implementation is scheduled for November 2025.

6. Expected Results and Impact

  • Significant reduction in waterborne diseases
  • Improved hygiene conditions in hospitals
  • Reduced school absenteeism due to illness
  • Reduced pressure on health facilities

In the long term, the project will help sustainably reduce Goma communities’ dependence on unsafe water sources.

7. Call for Solidarity

Clean water saves lives. Every contribution, small or large, helps deliver more water, reach more children, and protect more patients.
We make a sincere appeal to all donors, partners, and people of goodwill to support this high-impact humanitarian project. Together, we can ensure that no child or patient in Goma lacks water to drink, wash, or receive care.

8. Acknowledgements

We express our deep gratitude to all individuals and organizations that have already contributed to this project. Your support, along with the trust placed in us through GlobalGiving, encourages us to continue this mission with determination and transparency.
Thank you for believing in this project and in the future of Goma’s children and families.
