With the help of you – our loyal supporters - United Through Sport has reached 12 926 children and youth in 2019 with an assortment of programmes tailored to bring sport for good initiatives to Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa.
Of these beneficiaries, a total of 12 593 participated in coaching and mentorship at grassroots level, a further 202 received intensive support at junior school level, 75 children were supported to go to top level senior schools and 56 youth were supported with mentorship, training and tuition for tertiary studies.
2019 was an impactful year at United Through Sport in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa, but don’t take our word for it. Here is a what our beneficiaries and partners had to say:
Mr Mesese - Isaac Booi Primary School Principal
“Programmes like yours, especially the sports coaching, expose our kids at an early age to learn different skills in different sporting codes, which they wouldn’t normaly be exposed to like tennis and basketball. Hence you would find players wih raw talent like the calibre of Siya Kolisi, who also came from a disadvantaged background but is now the captain of South Africa’s rugby team. Your programmes unearth this raw talent and produce great sportspeople and provide opportunties for children who come from disadvantage backgrounds.”
Fazlin (12) - Junior School of Excellence beneficiary
“I enjoyed the programme, it has helped me a lot. It has created a safe space where I feel comfortable to speak about things I don’t usually speak about. It has really united us.”
Edna - mother of one of the Junior School of Excellence beneficiaries
“The programme has helped my daughter. When she started, she felt lonely but later she enjoyed working together with the other children. At school she improved a lot. She leads other children, as she was taught to lead by example by the JSE facilitators.”
Shamese (15) - Senior School of Excellence beneficiary
“The programme kept me out of the street. I would have dropped out by now. I think I would probably be having a baby by now.”
Keenan (15) - Senior School of Excellence beneficiary
“The programme had a very positive impact on my life. It changed my attitude and the way that I ask for help.”
Sibulele (19) - YOUth1st Network beneficiary
“I am here today because of United Through Sport. I was able to go to a top school which opened many doors for me. I grew as an individual and am grateful for the opportunity I got through United Through Sport.”
