500 women need dignified livelihood to rise!

By Sumedha Sharma | Project Leader

Dear Global Givers,

We are delighted to share an update from our project where rural women are being skilled to stitch cloth bags and face masks, which will help them earn a livelihood.

The past quarter has been faced with many challenges due to COVID-19 pandemic. Although the centres have reopened, most of the women are encouraged to stitch at home. At the centres, social distancing is maintained and all precautionary measures are taken to avoid contracting the virus. In addition to stitching cloth bags, there was a rise in demand for cloth face masks with the outbreak of the virus. Hence the women at the centres started to stitch face masks for community the frontline healthcare workers and to the members of the community to stop the spread of the virus.

An assessment was conducted on the livelihoods centres by our team on the ground to monitor the current situation. We are happy to report that more products have been developed at the centres. We have also observed that cohesiveness and team spirit among the women members have increased in the last quarter.

Women who were trained at our centres previously are also earning by stitching and selling clothes, bags and face masks in their own localities. These women either stitch clothes at home or use the vacant machines at the centres. Our team is also making efforts to establish linkages with the local market to sell face masks.

With the cases of the virus rising sharply across India, there are still many hurdles to overcome. Our team on the ground is working hard to ensure that these women continue to earn despite all the challenges and are able to provide for their families while at the same time they are able to keep themselves safe from the virus.

We thank you for your support and for taking this journey with us. A lot more work still needs to be done with these rural women, who are dependent on your crucial support. We urge you to continue to support this project and help us make a difference in their lives.

With deep gratitude,

Team iPartner India
