The Holidays at Ikhayalethemba

Dear Supporter,
It's been a tough but good year in Cape Town and the holidays have been a time to celebrate the children and staff for their hard work.
Activities were organised for the children including making and eating some reindeer treats as part of snack time. All part of getting into the Christmas spirit! The children also made Christmas bells.
The staff team then went to Ikhayalethemba village, where they performed their South African version of the 12 Days of Christmas. Bonjour the Magician made his debut, and there were lots of Christmas songs, a delicious South African lunch, a visit from Santa and the GVI South African version of the 12 Days of Christmas.
Following all the festivities of Christmas Day volunteers and children had Fun Friday with loom bands, manicures, face painting and dress ups. The children were making the most of some of their Christmas presents.
Thank you for your support in 2014. We are looking forward to bringing you more in 2015.

New Classroom at Nceduluntu

This week we have been working on the next steps of the new classroom at Nceduluntu!
It all started back in November last year when some of our volunteers walked from Cape Point to Table Mountain to raise money for improvements to Mama’s Centres coupled with donations received from supporters such as yourselves! The replacement of an old shipping container with an extension on the existing brick building is the first steps in these improvements. So far the local builders have added the extension, installed power and new toilets for the children as well as adding security bars. This week the plaster work had cured enough to start painting so our volunteers set to work with the first couple of coats of paint.
It’s starting to look great. This week we’ll complete the painting and aim to have floor coverings and some more of the interior such as a reading area started. The children and local staff will soon get to enjoy the full benefits of the classroom extension, including allowing the centre to get registered as an official educational centre by the South African Government.

Practical Items for Ikhayalethemba Village

Recent donations to this project have allowed us to purchase tables and chairs that are used by the children for eating times at the orphanage as well as plates, cups, cutlery, jugs and handwashing bowls for the children’s eating time as well as a container to store them
With a growing number of children at the orphanage, having enough eating utensils, tables and chairs can often be a challenge. Carers often use valuable time getting enough cups and plates together and those we already have are often cracked which is not ideal for keeping them clean. Tables are used for lessons and then brought to the eating area for meal times. This can also be time consuming and can interfere with the children’s lesson time.
We also purchased 5 new blue tables and 20 chairs which can be used for meal times. The intention is that where possible these are used only for meals. This is time efficient and also means that things such as paint and glue are not used on the tables which are also used for eating. The children also fit around the table more easily with the extra space the new chairs and tables provide.
This donation has provided resources that make meal preparation more efficient and hygienic. It also means meal time can be set up without interfering with classes. Storage is more efficient and importantly, the children know that once they are sitting at the blue tables, it’s meal time and they need to follow the meal time procedures.
