2025 Wrapped - Just Recovery

By Ariadna Godreau Aubert | Founder and director

As 2025 comes to a close, we celebrate this was a year without new natural disasters. That pause has given our communities a much-needed chance to breathe. At the same time, it forces us to confront a difficult but necessary truth—had a major event struck, Puerto Rico would have faced it under the weight of a deep political crisis. Agencies continue to be dismantled, essential resources are strained, long-term planning is absent, and entire populations—particularly immigrants—remain excluded or even criminalized. This landscape leaves people more vulnerable than any storm.

As the holidays approach, many of us will step back to rest and reconnect with our loved ones. That human pause matters. But it is also a moment to return to our communities and revisit what resilience truly means. For Ayuda Legal Puerto Rico, resilience is not about enduring hardship—it’s about ensuring a just recovery for all, especially for those who historically have been denied one.

We cannot afford to miss our focus. A new hurricane season begins in June, and other hazards—floods, earthquakes, fires—have no predictable schedule. Disasters do not wait for political stability or administrative readiness. That is why we are using this rare window to strengthen prevention, response, and mitigation strategies rooted in people’s rights and needs. Our work continues: providing legal education, supporting families navigating recovery systems, training community paralegals, and advocating for policies that protect residents rather than exclude them.

Your support allows us to stay ready—not only for the next emergency, but for the long, transformative work that prepares communities before it happens. Together, we can push for a recovery and preparedness plan worthy of our people: one that centers dignity, justice, and the right to stay in our homes, lands and communities.
