Disaster Response: Indonesia Earthquake & Tsunamis

Tsunami Strikes Islands in Sunda Strait

By Emergency Response Team | International Medical Corps

International Medical Corps stands ready to assist the Government of Indonesia’s relief efforts in the wake of the tsunami that struck islands in Sunda Strait.

The powerful tsunami waves arrived onshore at about 9:30 pm local time on December 22, causing deaths, injuries and damage on both sides of the strait. Initial reports indicate at least 200 people have been killed and more than 850 people are injured, though these numbers are likely to increase in the days to come. International Medical Corps is already working with a local aid organization to assess the most urgent needs and stands ready to support the Government of Indonesia to provide relief to the women, men, and children affected by this disaster.

This tsunami comes just three months after a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake caused a tsunami that struck Indonesia’s Sulawesi island. With more than 2,000 deaths and 206,000 people displaced, International Medical Corps continue to provide relief to the families affected on Sulawesi.

We thank the GlobalGiving community for your support as the needs unfold.
