Floods along Nigeria's Niger River return every year-and families pay the price every time. Children get sick, clean water disappears, and entire households are left with nothing overnight. This project will pre-position and rapidly distribute 500 emergency flood relief kits to vulnerable families, ensuring life-saving support reaches them immediately after flooding, when help matters most and delays cost lives.
Seasonal flooding along the Niger River repeatedly displaces families, destroys homes, and contaminates water supplies. In the chaos that follows, preventable illnesses spread quickly, especially among children and the elderly. Although these floods are predictable, communities lack emergency supplies and organized response systems. Without early support, families face prolonged suffering, avoidable disease outbreaks, and slower recovery after each disaster.
This project focuses on preparedness, speed, and local action. We will assemble 500 complete emergency kits and store them in elevated, secure community warehouses before flood season. Kits include water purification tablets, mosquito nets, blankets, hygiene items, cooking utensils, and child-specific supplies like oral rehydration salts. Trained local volunteers will distribute kits immediately when floods are forecasted or occur.
Timely support saves lives and restores dignity. This project will protect 500 families-approximately 3,000 people-each year, reducing waterborne disease, child illness, and post-disaster vulnerability. By shifting from reactive relief to early response, communities recover faster and build resilience to recurring climate shocks. The model is scalable, cost-effective, and strengthens local capacity for future flood emergencies.
