Together We Helped Children with Disabilities and Developmental Delays

By Riel Andaluz | Sr. Manager for Corporate Partnerships

Children with disabilities constitute one of the groups most impacted by inequalities and discrimination. Children are missing early detection, especially those who are not enrolled in any education program.

Children with disabilities are also often among the most adversely affected in any extreme weather events. With the Philippines being 1st in the World Risk Index 2022, the most affected country from extreme weather events, and 7th on UNICEF’s Child Risk Index, young children, especially those with disabilities, are particularly susceptible to the negative impacts of disasters and climate change. Climate change negatively impacts education through exposure to extreme temperature and rainfall conditions. It disrupts learning when child development centers and schools are closed due to weather disturbances and pandemics. It also makes access to quality education programs more difficult, putting even more burden on caregivers to integrate learning and responsive care at home.  Learning materials on climate change are also limited and not appropriate for young children. There is also no available material for caregivers to better discuss climate change with their young children without frightening them on its disastrous effects.

Through the combined support and donations of our donors like you Save the Children was able to implement Project LITE (Localizing Transformative and Inclusive Education) to protect the children's rights to inclusive education. Through a whole-of-community approach that focuses on leveraging and coordinating the resources and voices of the community, including children’s, Project LITE responds to and anticipates threats from climate change to support a thriving inclusive educational environment for children. Our accomplishments include:

* Training 79 teachers, including child development teachers, health workers and service providers  to deliver early identification services for children.

* Training 120 parents and caregivers  to deliver at-home learning sessions to their 3-8 year old children with disabilities and  developmental delays using the module Magulang Ko Teacher Ko (My Parent, My Teacher.)  These sessions aim to help parents understand how to use and incorporate the concepts and ideas they have learned into their daily activities and build their capcity to act on developmental delays at home either while waiting for formal assessment or therapy.

* Trained 30 service providers on gender and disability inclusive education.

We are proud to have directly reached 1,126 children and 155 adults. The project also indirectly benefitted more than 2,400 individuals in the community.

Parents and service providers found the sessions helpful and noted how much they learned about children’s rights during the sessions.

“Sobra itong nakakatulong para sa mga magulang upang malaman at maintindihan ang kailangan ng kanilang mga anak. Sana mas madalas pa mgkaruon ng mga ganitong seminar... At umabot sa mga magulang.. Sa mas maraming magulang salamat”

(This is such a big help for parents to know and understand the need of their children. I hope there will be more of these seminars and that this reach more parents.)

“Mas nalaman ko po yung mga karapatan ng bata kesa noong di pa ako naka-attend ng magulang ko teacher ko”

(I further learned the rights of children compared to the time i havent gone through the training

“Sana po ay magpatuloy pa ang mga session ng MKTK para mas madadagdagan pa ang aming kaalaman para sa mas ikabubuti ng aming sarili at mga anak”

(We hope these sessions will continue so we can further increase our knowledge so we can improve ourselves and the lives of our children.")

“Ako po ay natutuwa sa mga ginagawang pagsisikap ng aming faci na kami ay matuto at maipaabot ang lahat ng tulong na inyong binibigay sa amin

(I am pleased for all the efforts of our facilitator for us to learn and extend all possible support for us.)

On behalf of the the children and families, we were able to help through your generosity, trust and support, maraming salamat po (thank you very much!)
