Dear Friends,
In July, four of us traveled to Vietnam to work with our staff and students for three weeks. On this trip we had three of our board members who help with a variety of things from writing and photography, teaching music, and repairing instruments! Two of our members who help us run our music program traveled back to Vietnam for the third time this year. One is a string/music teacher from our local schools here in Rhode Island, and one owns a wonderful shop that rents stringed instruments, repairs stringed instruments, and offers lessons. They have both been a great asset to us since the start of our program.
As many of you know from our last news update, we have successfully hired two new, wonderful young art teachers, but have also been looking for a full-time music teacher to work with our two part-time music teachers. Over the summer we were able to interview two people, but were not successful in hiring either of them, they were not quite the right fit. Over the years it has been difficult to find young artist and musicians who want to work in the poor areas of Vietnam, most youth want to be working in the cities these days, but we are still optimistic that we will find someone eventually. In the meantime, we have our two teachers who have been with us for a long time and were both once students of ours early on in our program.
While we were in Vietnam this summer, our string teachers from the U.S. spent time providing lessons to our students, both violin and guitar students, and working with our teachers as well as repairing and inventorying all our violins. They also piloted a bucket drumming class in the village for girls, which was so fun, and the girls loved it! While we were there, along with our Vietnamese staff, teachers, and student volunteers, we also held our summer day camp, with 100 girls attending. Music was performed, games were played, collaborative art was made, and dances were danced! A great deal of fun for all!
We hope that you all are well as we move into fall. Thank you everyone for your continued support, and we will update you again soon
Sara, Laurette, Hannah and Patrick and of course the RPS Team
