Super Cyclone ''Amphan'' started crossing the Bangladesh coast around 5pm on Wednesday packing a wind speed of around 160 to 180kph rising to 200kph within 80km of its centre. It passed the Bangladeshi coastline by the midnight. Many low-lying areas were inundated, embankments collapsed, trees uprooted, fish and agricultural crops destoyed and houses damaged by this super cyclonic event in the coastal districts of Bangladesh. Mainly Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh has major damages due to this cyclonic event.
BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has tried to prepare and motivate local villagers (keep their precious things/treasure in secured place, arrange dry food, take shelter in our Cyclone Shelter before disaster) to face Cyclone Amphan two days prior from Amphan to hit Bangladeshi coast. On May 20, 2020, more than 600 people took shelter in the Cyclone shelter and training center of BEDS. BEDS staffs and its volunteers handled the situation efficiently. Local government and BEDS together arranged food and water for the sheltered people. All the sheltered people remained safe.
