Healthcare to Amazon Rainforest Communitites - Zoe Medical Expeditions 2025

By Victor Godoy M. de Moura | Institutional Relations Coordinator

In the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, reaching a doctor can mean traveling for days by boat — and for many families in remote riverside communities and Indigenous villages, specialized care is simply not available locally. In 2025, Zoé Medical Expeditions continued bringing healthcare directly to these territories, so people can receive diagnosis and treatment without having to leave their homes and face long, expensive journeys.

This year, we met patients who had been living with avoidable limitations for a long time — including people who struggled to read, study, work, or move safely because they could not see clearly. Vision care was a powerful example of immediate impact: 281 prescription eyeglasses were donated in 2025, helping children return to school with confidence and adults regain independence in daily life.

Across 2025, Zoé delivered 9,907 healthcare services, combining consultations, diagnostic exams, procedures, and surgeries. Within this total, our work included high-complexity specialist and surgical care—such as 1,430 consultations, 1,913 diagnostic exams, 203 surgeries, and 52 procedures—along with expanded early diagnosis in digestive health. In this area alone, we provided 514 services in one initiative (including 200 endoscopies, 44 upper endoscopies, 134 colonoscopies, and 134 anesthesia screenings) and 333 services in another (including 133 endoscopies, 46 colonoscopies, and 154 consultations), while also training 15 local health professionals.

These results represent people receiving care earlier, suffering less, and avoiding complications — and local teams gaining support to continue care after we leave. Thank you for making this possible. Your support helps Zoé keep bringing healthcare to those who protect the forest and depend on it for survival.
