Introduction
Receive Christmas greetings from Drylands Natural Resources Centre (DNRC) family. We trust you’re all well and in good spirits. We are excited just like before to share this progress report on forestry training and finance for the 700 smallholder farmers we are currently working with.
During the reporting quarter, we continued to work towards delivering our goals of environmental regeneration through continuous diversified tree planting and majorly indigenous specious. These trees have continued to grow and now we have tangible positive effects. The soils have continued to build and have become more fertile thus improving crop production. The trees have also created micro climates and the area has become cooler and we can slowly start introducing crops which need cooler climates. Families now have enough firewood for home use as well as for sale for more income. The trees are widening their diameter and almost getting ready for timber harvesting which is another product for income generation. Trees like Moringa have matured and farmers are now consistently selling the seeds for more income as we already have an international market for Moringa seeds. Farmers continue to use Moringa powder for their diet as well as selling the extra powder for extra income. The social fabric continue to strengthen as famers continue to get trainings together and working together. The fact that we a keen on preserving our tradition especially Kamba traditional Music, as farmers come together to dance and train each other, they continue to build the social fabric of the community as they get the chance to share experience thus becoming more close and organized for a common goal. We once again say thank you very much.
During the reporting quarter, we engaged on taking care of the seedlings in the tree nursery, training farmers on the hole preparations and issuing of trees during this October-December rains which is proving successful. Below are detailed activities during the quarter.
Tree Nursery
During the reporting quarter, the tree nursery personnel was busy with the general nursery management which include: wedding, watering and topdressing. We managed to raise a total of 76,925 of the following diverse species: Senna siemea, Senna spectabilis, Gravellia Robusta, Luceana,Zygeum, Acacia xanthopolea, Acacia Geradii, Acacia polyacatha, Guava, Lemon, Neem, Tamaridus indica, Passion, Pawpaw, Tree tomato, Mangoes, Avovado, Dilgergia melanoxilon, Taminalia brownie, Ecalyptus camandulesis, Moringa oleifera, Aborea, Melia Vonkensii, Croton megalocurpus
Outreach and training
During the reporting quarter, the outreach personnel was busy training the famers specifically on hole preparation and doing follow ups on the same.
The October-December rains came in time and during this reporting period we have been so busy issuing the ready seedlings to the farmers to go plant in their individual farms. About 80,000 seedlings have been so far issued.
