Summary

While most children in Ghana do attend school, the standard of education can be fairly low, and schools are often under-resourced and/or overcrowded. GVI Charitable Programs is partnered with nearly a dozen local schools in the community of Kokrobite to provide additional staff training resources, recruitment and onboarding of new teachers, necessary materials for learners (books, writing utensils, computers, stable internet access), and first-aid training to school staff.

Challenge

Primary and secondary schools in Kokrobite face common challenges experienced by most semi-rural Ghanaian schools today: too few available staff, low staff retention, a general lack of resources for learning materials and maintenance of the school grounds for a safe and risk-free environment for the students.

Solution

GVI Charitable Programs provides learning materials and technology to schools who cannot source them within their current school budgets. Furthermore, we work directly with these schools to help them recruit, train onboard and retain new teachers - as part of the public education rotational system, teachers will only come to these schools for a few short years post-graduation before moving to another school. We work to build a pipeline of future teachers and recruit locally to retain staff.

Long-Term Impact

GCP supports children from low socio-economic backgrounds to access education for the first time, the core focus of our work is to improve quality of education received by all students. This includes primarily providing well-trained, qualified and dedicated teaching staff and educators, school resources and equipment, and providing a learning environment and school facilities that promote the education of the children and improve the ability of the staff to deliver that quality education.
