Immediately following the powerful earthquakes that hit the south of Türkiye and northwest Syria on February 6th, Peace Winds mobilized a SAR (Search and Rescue) team along with local partners to respond to the increasing needs in the area. Peace Winds doctors and nurses joined an Emergency Medical Unit and field hospital in Gaziantep treating injuries of thousands of survivors.
The combined death toll has risen to over 47,000 in Türkiye and Syria, and search operations have wound down as subzero temperatures reduce the already slim chances of survival. In Türkiye alone, an estimated 1 million people are now living in tents and temporary shelters, while at least 80,000 people have been hospitalized. Up to 5 million people may be homeless in Syria, many already internally displaced after fleeing the civil war.
In the days following the disaster, Peace Winds spoke to Celile, a Turkish woman who survived the earthquakes in Hatay Province. You can watch her interview at the link below.
In the middle of overwhelming grief, anxiety, and helplessness, your financial support for our emergency medical and shelter team brings comfort, strength, and above all, hope. Thank you for joining Peace Winds in supporting these communities devastated by this tragedy.
