An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 has a devastating impact.
This is evidenced by the cities on the Turkish-Syrian border, which at dawn on February 6, 2023, witnessed the crumbling of hundreds of buildings and the loss of over 57,000 lives. The epicenter was between the cities of Hatay (Antioch) in Turkey and Latakia (Laodicea) in Syria.
The intervention of the Specchio d'Italia Foundation was immediate, particularly in these two cities.
While a chain of food supplies was initiated in Latakia, in Antioch, suitable premises were found to accommodate hundreds of earthquake victims. Rescue efforts were particularly challenging due to the closure of Hatay Airport (its runways devastated by the earthquake) and the obstacles imposed by the Syrian government on the entry of Western aid.
In recent months, in Antioch, a new arrangement has been identified for 65 families in prefabricated buildings on the outskirts of Antioch. Here, Specchio d'Italia manages a free canteen, provides healthcare assistance, afterschool activities, and play areas for children. The village has been named "Aina Kent," which in Turkish means "Mirror." These activities are expected to continue throughout 2024, and to support them, new significant resources are needed.
