In Gedo, Somalia, where extreme weather patterns threaten food security daily, our partner, Kaalmo Relief and Development, has been a lifeline for farming families in the area. Just recently, we have been supporting Kaalmo to assist 70 families facing the devastating effects of climate-related disasters. After floods destroyed their harvests, Kaalmo stepped in with a holistic approach to recovery and resilience.
Through climate-smart agriculture training, families learned innovative techniques to adapt to unpredictable weather patterns and improve their yields. Extension services ensured they received ongoing support as they applied these methods to their fields. Additionally, diverse vegetable seeds, tools, and farming inputs were distributed to help families kickstart production, fostering both immediate and long-term food security.
This effort has transformed family-level food security in Gedo. Families are not only meeting their nutritional needs but are also introducing a wider variety of vegetables into their diets, leading to better health outcomes. By increasing dietary diversity, the community is laying a foundation for resilience against future crises.
Kaalmo’s work is more than just agricultural assistance—it's about helping families regain stability, dignity, and hope. As they rebuild their livelihoods, these families are proving that with the right support, even the harshest challenges can be overcome.
