Seed Programs International (SPI) is partnering with Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) to support 900 farmers across six counties, including Busia, Bungoma, Transzoia, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, and Elgeiyo. The program combines donated seed and agricultural training for the farmers to increase vegetable production and income. The farmers attended trainings at demonstration sites established in each county and were supported to sell excess produce once it was harvested to increase income.
AMPATH is a healthcare organization that understands improved diets create health benefits that reduce hospital visits. This is our fourth year partnering with AMPATH on a vegetable growing program. Our previous programs showed clear health benefits resulting from the program, with participants indicating fewer hospital visits and an improved more balanced diet. Improving nutrition with essential nutrients helped reduce malnutrition and improve food security.
The program also strengthened local connections between seed companies, farmers, and agricultural trainers. Farmers received both high-quality seeds from a local seed company and technical training from Kenya’s Department of Agriculture. These partnerships created vital feedback loops that strengthen local resources and get seeds into the hands of people that could put it to good use.
Demonstration sites were established in each county to provide the farmers with specialized training. The Department of Agriculture was engaged to provide the technical training. In 2023, we focused on donating seed without providing training support. This led to participants highlighting the value of and need for continued training in support for their growing activities.
Beyond improving diets, farmers are now generating additional income by selling excess produce. These earnings allow families to cover school fees, healthcare, and other essential expenses, improving overall quality of life while boosting the local economy and food supply.
Your support makes this impact possible. Together, we are building a future where seeds grow into health, resilience, and opportunity for farming families across Kenya.
