Building a More Sustainable Future with Ecobricks

By Susan Oertle | Co-Founder

New Ecobricks Bench
New Ecobricks Bench

The Angel Projects' Ecobrick Project continues to gain momentum as we look for new and more creative ways to utilize these bricks.  Our Ugandan staff members continue to gather every Wednesday to work on constructing these bricks out of the trash they've collected throughout the community.  They are often joined by our sponsored children and other community members.  Recently, staff members used the ecobricks to construct a new type of bench that is more lightweight and easy to transport than the older model.  Our hope is to provide seating in important community gathering spots around Rubuguri, such as at the town council building and on the soccer field.

Additionally, last week our staff members worked with our sponsored children to disassemble our greenhouse, which is constructed out of plastic bottles, and to replace the old bottles with new ones.  It is essential to replace the bottles every three years in order to maintain the integrity of the structure.  The old bottles that were removed from the greenhouse will be repurposed into constructing ecobricks.  The goal of our Ecobrick Project is to reuse plastic waste from the community so that it doesn't pile up or get burned, both of which can have a devastating impact on the local environment and the people who live there.

Do you have a creative idea for what we can build with our ecobricks in the future?  Reach out and let us know!

As always, a big THANK YOU to our sponsors for all of your support--our projects could never happen without you!
