Economic Initiatives for 200 Indigenous Women
Response to the above challenges and the challenges currently facing the project.
The project faces challenges that have their origin in structural issues: poverty, violence (organized, family and gender), environmental deterioration, the solution to these is a long-term task, since in general they persist to the extent that the causes that generate them continue to exist. The impact of organized violence is a shared concern in all communities and is mitigated by establishing protection and surveillance measures established by the communities; mechanisms were also arranged for the Xilotl team to remain in communication to know its location and status permanently. Gender-based violence persists, but the information, obtained in interviews and observation logs, shows important advances in raising awareness about the rights to a life without violence.
In addition to training on topics for empowerment, balance of power in relationships and increased self-esteem, technical and financial training of the entrepreneurs continues so that the partners understand the importance of their role in the family economy, as well as internalize the idea that obtaining personal income has a liberating role in promoting economic independence and self-esteem. In addition, work is being done with men to encourage them to at least get involved in household chores.
On the other hand, the imbalance in the rainfall regime has put production at risk, consequently, Xilotl has proposed to reinforce the regenerative diversified milpa, which is a comprehensive technical proposal that mitigates the impact of climate change and allows more production to be obtained. In order to overcome the fear of the partner to attend the workshops outside their community, due to violence, strategies have been applied; and that the facilitators visit them in their communities so as not to lose the rhythms of assistance achieved.
