YOU are our champions for girls education. CW 2015 is well under way, 3 months into the school year and the girls are deep in the learning process using the CW style of teaching you make possible with your generous donations for their education.
CW's 110 girls send you hugs and kisses, their expression of Gratitude, for the life changing gift you give them -- AN EDUCATION!
Muchas Gracias Amigos
Capturing student attention and holding it is difficult, but necessary for learning and creative Interactive learning is what we focus on with most subject matter and the results are terrific. The arts when incorporated into the subject lesson, get immediate attention and deliver easily those lessons directly to the girls. History lessons for example are often acted out with class made costumes, students do research for the story they will act out and a school history performance is created by several or all classes, then shared with all of the student. Everyone learns the history lesson and learning about their history is fun. Creative projects teach girls to think outside the box and dare to reach for something new and different.
The CW style of teaching really does work!
One example is the enactment of the 'Inti Raymi' (Festival of the Sun) a religious ceremony of the Inca Empire in honor of the god Inti, one of the most venerated deities of the Inca religion. It was a celebration of the Winter Solstice. Students create their costumes out of recycled materials and research the history to learn the details needed to act it all out. See image of the 'Inti Raymi' history lesson.
Mathematics is another subject where the girls engage with a practical lessons around shopping for food. We use mostly packaged goods for convenience, but teach about buying bulk items like rice, beans, lentils etc. that must be weighed out and priced per kilo. The girls set up a market in the school and using play money learn to quickly calculate the cost of something and the exchange of bills for coins in their heads. The students then go home and teach their families. Many mothers with little math skill are often cheated at the open market since they do not have these skills.
The understanding of mathematics is a daily need for us all. Chicuchas Wasi must also balance CW School expenses with the available funds. Every year the CW board must answer this question: Is austerity needed this year or are we able to fund all of our programs? So the practical lessons of managing money are included and the students take home these lessons to share with their families. See image of the classroom food store reality lesson.
Teaching our girls to think out of the box continues when the two kindergarten classes create a Mother - Daughter project to create something to wear out of recycled materials. They set up a Runway for the girls to model their creation for the school on the National Day to honor Kindergarten students. The bonus is a deepening relationship between Mother and Daughter. Very creative outfits indeed! See the creations photos.
