Volunteers and Children are Back at DAKTARI

By Nathan Beraud | Fundraising Manager

Dear Friends,

After a quiet period, due to COVID and travel restrictions, students of Lepono Highschool have finally been able to come back to DAKTARI over the last couple of weeks!

Florine and Lotje from the Netherlands, Cris from Brazil, Kate from Switzerland and Alice from Germany, are the volunteers currently teaching the children, with the support of Nancy and Lebo, our two great volunteer coordinators. We have an amazing team to ensure that every child coming here learns and enjoys her/his experience.

The children continue to learn a lot from our environmental education program with the different lessons. The highlights for the students last week were:

  • Animal tracks, animal knowledge and animal care, to help them get to know the animals better, to help them not fear the ones who are harmless, protect those who are poached and ignite their passion for them.
  • Environment, is to teach them how to keep it clean and why this is important. They also learn the basics about how it works like the cycle of water, the cycle of life and the cycle of oxygen.
  • Making South Africa a better place, to let them think by themselves about what problems their country or villages are facing and how they can act to be part of the solution.
  • Politeness, to get them to understand how important it is for them to respect other people throughout their life, either in school for now and also in their future work.
  • Swimming, as the weather has been good these last few weeks, we taught some children how to swim and they really had lots of fun and laughter whilst doing that.

Hopefully, with everything they have learnt, we hope that they will be able to teach other people in their villages as well as their families about their natural heritage.

We hope all is well on your side and thank you again for your trust and support. We could not do this without you!
