Promoting gender equality is a critical part of violence prevention. School initiatives are well placed to prevent violence against women, preventing school drop out of girls through building life skills and changing social norms with both boys and girls.
Community interventions can empower women and engage men through a gender-focused “School for parents”, building caregivers‘ tools necessary to raise healthy and successful children.
In Yo quiero Yo puedo we know that girls need to be listened to and considered so that they can fully develop. Our comprehensive program include:
Life skills with students (e.g. assertiveness, conflict resolution, decision making, negotiation); dating violence prevention program with youth; values, beliefs and behaviors for gender equality; human rights and school for parents among other topics.
The results show that there are changes in behaviors that promote gender equity:
The school programs I want to I can, have been implemented in Mexico City, Ciudad Juárez, Hidalgo and Tlaxcala. We need support to take the program to more schools in marginalized areas where violence against girls increases day by day.
