We’re proud to share a major milestone in our mission to improve math education in Bulgaria: Our scaling partnership with UniCredit Foundation is now official and 50 more schools will join the "Better at Maths with Khan Academy" program over the next three years! This will expand current efforts based on the support of donors like you, along with major donors such as the America for Bulgaria Foundation and various companies This means thousands more students will have access to world-class learning tools in math and hundreds of teachers will be supported to effectively integrate Khan Academy into their classrooms.
Better at Maths with Khan Academy: More Schools & First Term Results
Starting in the 2025/2026 school year, “Education Without Backpacks” will support 15 new schools across Bulgaria as part of the "Better at Maths with Khan Academy" program. Our three-year initiative will provide teachers with intensive training and ongoing mentorship. Students will benefit from a wide range of educational resources, including thousands of videos, exercises, and articles, as well as tools to monitor their progress.
By joining the program, schools will enhance their educational practices, gain recognition and contribute to national educational reforms.
For the schools already participating in the program, two additional teacher training sessions took place in March and April 2025. Thus, we both mentor as well as continually train teachers to help their students improve their math skill with just 30 minutes of weekly practice at Khan Academy.
Teachers & Principals Testimonials About Impact
Mrs. Zoya Koleva from Stara Zagora shares that Khan Academy has significantly improved her students' performance and motivation in Maths.
Mrs. Silvia Sasheva from Ravda highlights how Khan Academy supports Ukrainian refugee students in overcoming language barriers and challenges in Maths.
Magdalena Yapadzhieva and Radka Rizova, principals of primary schools in Burgas and Blagoevgrad, talk about how Khan Academy inspired teachers. Both schools see significant improvements in student motivation and performance thanks to the platform's interactive approach.
Advocacy Efforts: Speaking Up for Education
As part of common NGO expert efforts to contribute to strategic and legislative changes that the Ministry of Education is considering, on February 28 we had the opportunity to meet and discuss with the Minister of Education along with Deputy Ministers and other key members of the Ministry’s team.
Our fruitful collaboration with the Municipality of Burgas, the Municipality of Blagoevgrad, and the Regional Department of Education – Burgas continues. We are currently in discussions with them to expand our reach and include new schools starting next year. Furthermore, we are in negotiations with more municipal authorities as potential partners of our school program scaling efforts.
Exciting events
Celebrating Success with Students
To celebrate students’ progress in Maths with Khan Academy, we organized two special events at 71st Secondary School “Peyo Yavorov” and 75th Primary School “Todor Kableshkov” in Sofia, combining learning with sports. Over 60 students received certificates for their dedication to Khan Academy and took part in inspiring arm wrestling workshops led by Bulgarian champions Emanuil Manasiev and Yanislav Iliev. The events were part of our “Better at Maths with Khan Academy” program, and took place in our two pilot schools. Our guests encouraged students to stay curious, disciplined, and motivated – both in school and beyond.
Khan Academy School Competitions
Between February 24 and March 7, students from our “Better at Math with Khan Academy” program participated in the Khan Academy LearnStorm Challenge, a fun initiative that made Maths lessons even more engaging. Key results include participation from 17 classes and a total of 161 new “mastery rings” earned by the students. Participants from six schools received certificates on Pi Day, March 14.
STEM lesson with Khan Academy
At XI Primary School "Hristo Botev" in Blagoevgrad Mrs. Katya Vezenkova presented a different kind of Math lesson with her 4th-grade students using Khan Academy. Students solved problems using phones, laptops, QR codes and even a robot, while celebrating their progress in Khan Academy.
