Celebrating Mother's Day with WGEP!

By Maria Flores | Communications and Development Coordinator

Rebecca & Josphine

To celebrate Mother’s Day, Women’s Global Education Project created a special video honoring the strong mothers and their daughters in our programs!

One mother-daughter duo featured is Rebecca & Josphine, who live in Tharaka-nithi county, Kenya. As a child, Rebecca was forced to drop out of school to help her family tend to their livestock. For the past 7 years, Rebecca has enrolled in WGEP’s adult literacy program, where she has learned to read, write, and manage her household finances. We created the adult literacy program for women like Rebecca, to help bridge the gap between mothers’ and daughters’ education! This year, 900+ women will participate in adult literacy classes across rural Kenya & Senegal.

Josphine, Rebecca’s daughter, has thrived in school and beyond, thanks to the scholarship support, mentoring, and leadership training that she receives as a WGEP scholar. When asked about her daughter, Rebecca shared, "I am very proud of my daughter. She encourages me and makes me feel motivated to push harder and make sure she gets everything she wants to have a comfortable life in school. My daughter is a visionary - she wants to grow up to be a doctor! Her father recently died, but she is determined and is going to change the history of our family through education!"

You can watch the video here and learn more about our comprehensive programs here. Thank you for believing in the power of girls’ education!
