Computer Classes Expand Scholars' Prospects

By Amy Maglio | Founder & Executive Director

Since 2007, WGEP has worked in rural Kenya to provide access to quality education and supplemental programs to empower women and girls to build better lives and foster equitable and sustainable communities. Recognizing that educating girls in marginalized and impoverished communities is a multi-faceted challenge, WGEP employs a holistic approach by involving entire communities and finding solutions for the varied contextual barriers that may keep girls from accessing an education.

One complementary program that has become very popular over the past few years is our Computer Program. An average of 30 high school scholars participate in these computer classes during long academic holidays. The girls gain new skills such as typing, computer programming, Microsoft Suite, Adobe publications and more. They also take an online course through a nearby university and earn a computer training certificate to enhance their future employability and chances of admission in higher education.

Lucy is a WGEP scholar in her final year of high school who has been taking computer classes since last year. She had the following to say about her experience:

I walk one hour every day during my school holidays to attend the computer classes. The only computer I had ever seen before was in the Director's office at my school. I am so happy that I am now learning new skills that will prepare me for my future as I pursue a university degree.

This program and its great popularity and success demonstrates the positive impact we are having and our success in creating communities that value and support girls’ and womens’ education and advancement.
