Support to orphans in rural Tororo

By Henry Okumu | Project Leader

Improving Classroom Participation Among Orphaned Learners
Challenge
In rural schools, some orphaned children face difficulties participating in classroom activities because they lack basic learning materials. A child without an exercise book or pen may be unable to complete assignments, take notes, or participate fully in lessons.
These challenges may appear small, but for children living in households with very limited income, they can have a significant impact on their educational experience.
Activity
AlliedAid Uganda provided essential scholastic materials to selected orphaned children in rural communities of Tororo District.
The support was designed to give children the basic tools required for everyday learning while encouraging them to remain committed to their education.
Results
Following the distribution, beneficiary children were better equipped to participate in classroom activities. They could write notes, complete exercises, and work on assignments using their own materials.
The intervention also helped promote a greater sense of dignity and confidence among the children. Instead of feeling disadvantaged because they lacked school supplies, beneficiaries could participate more comfortably alongside their classmates.
Impact
The support contributed to creating a more supportive learning environment for vulnerable children. It also demonstrated the importance of relatively small interventions in addressing barriers that can have significant consequences for children's education.
Next Steps
AlliedAid Uganda will continue monitoring the educational needs of supported children and working with caregivers and community stakeholders to identify additional challenges.
Future support will focus on helping vulnerable children access scholastic materials, school fees, uniforms, meals, and other educational necessities where resources are available
