In many places, getting to school is simple. In Magbaikoli Village, Sierra Leone, it requires crossing a dangerous river by canoe each day. During the rainy season, rising waters and strong currents make that journey even more risky.
Recently, the Develop Africa Sierra Leone team (DASL) visited Magbaikoli Village to provide direct support to the community. During the visit, students received essential school supplies to strengthen their learning, and four certified life jackets were distributed to the village elders who transport the children to and from school each day.
For this community, safety and education go hand in hand.
In the past, lives have been lost in the river. By equipping the elders who oversee the canoe crossings with life jackets, the daily journey has become safer and more secure. While the river remains part of village life, the risk has been reduced.
Justice, Program Manager, shared the community’s gratitude:
“For far too long, Magbaikoli village has lost many lives due to the dangerous river. There was no way we could get this kind of opportunity. We are truly thankful.”
The school supplies provided during the visit also ensure that students arrive not only safely, but prepared. When children have notebooks, pens, and learning materials, they are better able to focus, participate, and succeed in class.
Access to education is more than classrooms and textbooks. It includes safe passage, community leadership, and practical solutions that remove barriers. When students can travel safely and learn confidently, attendance improves and futures expand.
Safety creates stability. Stability supports education. Education shapes the future.
Thank you for helping make that future possible.
