Hands-On Science in Action: 350 STEM Kits Transform Learning at Smart Start Academy

By Amy Baty-Herbert | Project Leader

We are excited to share the impact of a recent donation of 350 STEM kits to Smart Start Academy for Science and Technology in Yonni Town, Pujehun District, Sierra Leone.

Watch the students in action here: https://youtu.be/9XMOmWWrpvE

There is a powerful difference between explaining science and experiencing it.

In the video, students conduct a water filtration and evaporation experiment using their newly donated STEM kits from Develop Africa and NexGen STEM. They observe changes in water clarity, discuss alkalinity, and explore evaporation and condensation in real time.

This is not passive learning.

This is curiosity in motion.  This is confidence growing. This is STEM education becoming real.

For many students, this is their first-ever hands-on science experience.

Instead of memorizing concepts, they are testing, building, observing, and asking deeper questions. Experiential learning strengthens comprehension and critical thinking in ways textbooks alone cannot.

And the difference is already visible.

The administration, teachers, and students of Smart Start Academy extend their heartfelt appreciation to Develop Africa, NexGen STEM, and every donor who made this possible. In a district where STEM-focused education is rare, these kits are transformative.

Thank you for investing in hands-on learning. Thank you for believing in these students. Thank you for helping bring meaningful STEM education to future leaders in Sierra Leone.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Amy and the Develop Africa Team
