For our students, receiving a backpack filled with school supplies may look simple. But behind every completed school-supply set is work by the Develop Africa Sierra Leone (DASL) team.
Each year, donated school supplies arrive in a variety of quantities and packages. Before they can reach students, the DASL team must carefully sort, count, organize, and assemble the supplies into individual sets so that each student receives the materials they need to begin the school year prepared. This includes organizing items such as pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners, notebooks, and other basic learning materials.
This preparation is an important part of our annual scholarship and school-support process.
Once the individual sets are prepared, the DASL team coordinates the logistics for distributing supplies to more than 100 students in Freetown, Bo, Makeni, and Kamawornie.
The goal is to have the distributions completed before the new school year starts in September. For many children, these supplies may seem simple—but they make a meaningful difference.
The annual distribution is about more than handing out pencils and notebooks. It is an opportunity for Develop Africa and our Sierra Leone team to remind students that their education matters and people are investing in their future.
We are grateful to the donors who provide these supplies and make it possible for the DASL team to prepare and distribute them to students across Sierra Leone.
From sorting hundreds of supplies to creating individual packages and coordinating delivery across four communities, there is a lot of work behind every student's school-supply set.
And it is all worth it when a student walks into school in September prepared, encouraged, and ready to learn.
