For many students, limited or unreliable electricity makes studying at home after dark difficult. These portable solar lights offer a practical solution, allowing children to read, complete homework, and prepare for exams in the evening using light charged by the sun.
Speaking with SLBC, Develop Africa Programs Manager Joseph K. explained the importance of this support:
“We are facing shortage of electricity, so these lights will help them greatly with their studies at night.”
Students also shared their excitement about the opportunities their new lights provide. One student explained:
“With this solar light, I will be able to study at night and be clever in school. I will be using this solar light to study how to pass my exam.”
For these children, a solar light means more than illumination. It provides an opportunity to spend additional time reading, practicing lessons, completing assignments, and preparing for important examinations. Teachers also welcomed the distribution, recognizing the value of helping students continue their studies when electricity is unavailable at home.
The distribution of 3,800 solar lights demonstrates what partnerships can accomplish when organizations work together to address barriers to education. By providing students with a reliable source of light, Develop Africa and SolarBuddy are helping create better conditions for learning beyond the classroom.
Every light creates another opportunity to learn. Every opportunity brings a child one step closer to a brighter future.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Amy and the Develop Africa Team
