The new year is off to a good start! We have 16 Beth's Girls on EBZEF college/vocational school scholarships with an additional five girls awaiting Covid-delayed graduations. One of the three new recipients is studying sustainable Natural Resources Management and Control. Our up-and-coming physician is in year five of her seven-year program. We are so proud of these remarkable young women!
Construction continues on the new three-classroom block. In addition, the ablution block (lavatory) for boys is now underway, with septic tanks dug and a foundation laid. EBZEF expects to help construct another teacher's house or two as well. The Elizabeth Bowers Memorial Library is requesting funds to update their impressive book collection.
The Pre-School has received a grant for a food and garden program for the children of the Lumwana West Community. It will supply lunches for disadvantaged students as well as teach them how to grow their own food. While Covid cases are rising in Zambia there have been none in our remote village thus far. The community has been trained in Covid prevention by World Vision Zambia. EBZEF is increasingly grateful to have brought fresh, clean water to the village to assist with sanitation.
