My name is Alifya. I've been blind my whole life and my circle of friends are from the school for the blind that I attend. I have never felt so special as when I was selected to be part of the Educate a Girl programme and then learned that my classes were to be held at the Sindh Governor House, original home of the Founder of our nation Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Quaid-e-Azam.
Each day, we would have a different instructor on a different topic. My favourite was Dr. Lindblad who had come all the way from University of Stockholm to teach us! All of us students were taught the same way, and plenty of interactive sessions were included and incorporated into the training so that it was easy for me to learn and more fun as well!
As a big surprise, Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan, Governor of Sindh, presided over a special graduation ceremony arranged for our batch of 45 students. I didn't know he was going to be there when I courageously asked the organizers if I could bake a cake for the occasion. It was such an important milestone in my life and I really wanted to make something sweet. I baked it myself - all chocolate - and then put some smarties and sprinkles on top. I'm not sure how it looked, but it tasted yum! The Governor was so sweet about it and he was really friendly. I'll remember this course my whole life! Thank you, Educate a Girl.
