We have great news!
Project Education South Sudan recently merged with another small nonprofit organization (Empowerment Through Education or ETE Foundation) with the same mission: educating South Sudanese girls. Together we will operate under the name Girls With Books!, and we are in the process of seeking new project approval with GlobalGiving under this new name. In the meantime, we are continuing to provide tuition and personal support to girls in private schools in South Sudan.
Our Executive Director, Micklina Kenyi, just returned from spending 2 months visiting the girls we are supporting, as well as the school administrators who run the schools, ensuring that the girls are receiving a quality education in preparation for their future leadership in the South Sudan communities where they live. Micklina would like to share the story about one of the girls with whom she met during her trip.
I first met Joyce in 2021 when she was 13 years old. At that time Joyce was a very shy young girl who rarely raised her voice. She could not look at me when I asked her a question. Her communication in the English language was limited. Today, she spoke to me in English with great confidence. Joyce is fifteen, one of the 20 girls that Girls With Books! currently supports at Bro. Augusto Primary school in Kit, Juba, South Sudan. Joyce is also an active student leader. Girls With Books! provides tuition, boarding and supplies for 150 students in several locations in South Sudan and from the refugee camps in northern Uganda.
Today, I had the opportunity to sit down with Joyce under a mango tree, asking her to share briefly about her academic journey and new life experience in the boarding school. She looked me straight in the eyes and said, “I wouldn’t have been in this beautiful school with great teachers had it not been for the educational support I received from Girls With Books! My Parents are poor, in the remote village of Imurok Payam of Torit county in Eastern Equatoria state and they never went to school. I arrived here at school with nothing. So, I consider myself a lucky girl and I thank God for this great opportunity.”
She told me back home in her community, there are many families who cannot allow their daughters to go to school. They prefer to send boys to school, rather than girls. Many young girls of her age will be taking care of their younger siblings and helping support the family in the house and farm. “Sometimes girls will be forced to marry at a young age” she said, “…and I don't like it!” Then she added, "Coming to school from home gives peace of mind."
Joyce’s great performance in the classroom and remarkable outdoor activities (soccer and volleyball) made her a school star and she was elected by school administration to be a school head girl who coordinates between the female students and the school administration about their welfare and issues affecting female students’ wellbeing. She said the quality of education she is receiving has really given her the knowledge and leadership skills necessary to navigate and adapt to a new school environment. “I am striving to be a great leader to serve my fellow students at this beautiful school with enthusiasm." Joyce hopes that after the completion of her studies, she will go back to the village and contribute to her community and the world.
Thank you again for the help you are providing Project Education South Sudan and now Girls With Books! as we support bright young students like Joyce.
