Educating one person, saves many from HIV

We are very proud with the inauguration today of the THIRD artistic exhibition of the call “HIV: a look through Art”, which we carry out like the previous ones, with the support of Comfenalco-Antioquia. The first exhibition was held in 2016 and the second in 2018, both added more than 4,500 visitors. During the Covid-19 pandemic it was not possible to continue this initiative, but this year it has been possible, and we hope to be able to continue replicating every two years.

Today is also a significant day, it is the eve of WORLD AIDS DAY, pandemic that has affected more than 78 million people worldwide since its beginning more than 40 years ago. Medellín is one of the most affected cities in the country, and where they register more than 1,000 cases a year, the majority in young people.

Thanks to advances in treatment, HIV/AIDS infection is no longer a fatal disease and people can aspire to a long life and while they are under treatment they do not put others at risk. That is why it is important that all people know their status and can access treatment. It is required that we all know about the infection and its prevention. We extend the WHO message for this year “Let communities lead” recognizing the fundamental role that communities play in their commitment and leadership to accelerate the response to HIV. At the foundation we are convinced that by educating one person we save many others from HIV.

Our foundation celebrates 21 years since its constitution. This exhibition is part of the prevention program, which became a reality in 2012, and has benefited more than 20,000 people, with the help of the Immuno-virology Group of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Antioquia, the San Blas Corporation, Fraternidad Medellín and GlobalGiving.

We would like to thank each one of you for the presence, which makes sense to our dissemination purpose, we hope you enjoy it.

We thank Comfenalco-Antioquia for helping and guiding us in this project. Especially to Manuela Betancourt, artist and Manager of Plastic and Visual Arts, together with the team of the Department of Culture of the Social and Intellectual Welfare Management of Comfenalco-Antioquia, who supported us so that the call for art and this exhibition became a reality. We cannot forget Dr. Gustavo Trujillo, who no longer does part of Comfenalco, but he was the one who initially opened the doors for this initiative in 2016 as Social Services Manager.

We thank the jury, who was formed on this occasion as follows:

On behalf of Comfenalco-Antioquia were the artist Manuela Betancourt, already mentioned, and Ana Cristina Berrío, Plastic and Visual Arts Analyst. On behalf of the Foundation was the architect and artist Amparo Betancourt. They selected the finalists and winners, autonomously and without any influence from the Foundation. (The repetition in the surnames is pure coincidence, they are not relatives).

We hope that this exhibition and its different works are to your liking and that they meet the objective of establishing a dialogue around HIV, raise awareness and help disseminate knowledge and prevention measures for this infection, highlighting self-care, respect and free determination in the exercise of responsible, healthy and pleasurable sexuality, and especially, help reduce stigma and discrimination.

Estamos muy orgullosos con la inauguración hoy de la TERCERA muestra artística de la convocatoria “VIH: un mirada a través del Arte”, que realizamos al igual que las anteriores, con el apoyo de Comfenalco-Antioquia. La primera exposición se realizó en el año 2016 y la segunda en el 2018, ambas sumaron más de 4500 visitantes. Durante la pandemia Covid-19
no fue posible continuar esta iniciativa, pero este año se pudo concretar, y esperamos poder seguir replicando cada dos años. 

Hoy también es un día significativo, es la víspera de DIA MUNDIAL de la lucha contra el sida, pandemia que ha afectado a más de 78 millones de personas a nivel mundial desde sus inicios hace ya más de 40 años. Medellín es una de las ciudades más afectadas del país, y donde se registran más de 1.000 casos en el año, la mayoría en jóvenes.

Gracias a los avances en el tratamiento, la infección por VIH / sida, dejó de ser una enfermedad mortal y las personas pueden aspirar a una larga vida y bajo tratamiento, no ponen en riesgo a otras personas. Por eso es importante que todas las personas conozcan su estado, y puedan acceder al tratamiento. Se requiere que todos conozcamos sobre la infección y su prevención.

Extendemos el mensaje de la OMS para este año “Que lideren las comunidades” reconociendo el papel fundamental que desempeñan las comunidades en su compromiso y liderazgo para acelerar la respuesta al VIH. En la fundación estamos convencidos que educando una persona salvamos muchas otras del VIH.

Nuestra fundación cumple 21 años desde su constitución. Esta exposición se enmarca en el programa de prevención, que se hizo realidad en el 2012, y ha beneficiado a más de 20.000 personas, con ayuda del Grupo de Inmuno-virología de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Antioquia, la Corporación San Blas, Fraternidad Medellín y GlobalGiving.

No podemos olvidar al Dr. Gustavo Trujillo, que ya no hace
parte de Comfenalco, pero fue quien nos abrió las puertas inicialmente para esta iniciativa en el 2016 como Gerente de Servicios Sociales.

Esperamos que esta exposición y sus distintas obras sean de su agrado y que cumplan el objetivo de entablar un diálogo entorno al VIH, sensibilice y ayude a difundir conocimiento y las medidas de prevención de esta infección, destacando el auto-cuidado, el respeto y la libre determinación en el ejercicio de una sexualidad responsable, sana y placentera, y en especial, ayude a disminuir el estigma y la discriminación.
