Vishwasai - Physiotherapist in the making

By Lizzie Guinness | Programme Manager

Vishwasai
Vishwasai

Vishwasai has been supported by the Goa project for a number of years. He has one brother and one sister. His family background is not too good or well educated, and his father has insecure work.

He started to attend the boys hostel when he was 11 years old and in 6th standard.  When Vishwasai was 15 and in 10th standard, his parents split up and this had a strong impact on Vishwasai and his siblings. 10th standard is a critical year for Indian students as this is when they take the School Completion Certificate which gives them the opportunity to access further education and better jobs. As the courts became involved in the family matter and there was more and more fighting, this caused a lot of emotional distress for the children.  Both Vishwasai's siblings dropped out of school.

The project in Goa was determined that Vishwasai would not follow the same path. Our hostel wardens gave Vishwasai a lot of extra attention to help him through this difficult period. They met him every day and ask about his study and tried to keep him busy in his study. As a result he passed 10th class with good marks and took admission in 11th class in science stream. With the help of Karuna special schemes for college student’s education, Vishwasai was provided with a scholarship and residential accommodation at a hostel. He passed with good marks in 12th class i.e. in higher secondary certificate.

Vishwasai's dream and ambition was to become a doctor, so he took the medical entrance exam, but he did not get sufficient marks, which was needed for medical admission. Instead, he tried for paramedical and he got admission at the physiotherapy college.

Now he has completed second year and promoted to third year. The project has continued to provide financial support to him so that he can pay the the college admission fee. He feels that due to hostel, he can make his dream true.
