Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Through Education

Let us introduce you to Mahnaz, a seven-year-old girl who, before joining our program, spent her days weaving carpets. Like her 17-year-old sister—who never had the opportunity to attend school and remains illiterate—Mahnaz believed that her future was already decided. She expected to spend her life weaving carpets, earning barely enough to survive.

But with your support, Mahnaz successfully completed first grade and is now eagerly preparing to enter second grade. She no longer sees a future limited by poverty; instead, she dreams big. She says: "I want to open a shop where my sister and mother can sell the carpets they make instead of weaving for others."

She adds: "I also want to teach other girls so they can learn instead of weaving carpets."

Peace and Freedom Begin with Educated Minds

Dear Friend and Family of AAFE,

I’m thrilled to share that our students are thriving in their studies and never miss a day of school! Our second graders have become more focused, and while they eagerly embrace their learning, the girls are already facing the harsh reality of being banned from education beyond the sixth grade.

One of our incredible students, Aysha, a bright and determined 8-year-old in second grade, recently shared a powerful message. In a video we received, she confidently recites a poem, declaring that no one can stop her from pursuing her education,

I like to share another one of our students' inspiring journey with you. Manija used to sell pens and plastic bags on the streets to help her family, earning just $0.71 to $1 a day. Now, she proudly says, "I am not a pen and plastic seller anymore. I am a student. Coming to school in my uniform fills me with joy. Every day, I thank God for this opportunity."

Her family’s struggles are real—her father is ill, and her mother works washing clothes in people’s homes to make ends meet. Despite these challenges, Manija is determined to continue her education. “I want peace in my country, I don’t want people to be killed, and I want to keep learning,” she says with a hopeful heart.

This story is just one example of the life-changing impact your support is making.

From poverty to a beautiful farm

Dear Friend,

It's with great joy that I share the transformation in the lives of the 25 new students we enrolled in a private school this year in Herat province of Afghanistan. These students, who were once weaving carpets, cleaning dried fruits, and selling eggs on the streets to make less than $0.50 per day, are now on a path to a brighter future, thanks to your support.

Every student has a story to tell, and we are archiving all of them. I would like to share Faisal’s (not his real name) story with you.

Faisal is seven years old at first grade. We met him while he was working with his father on the street selling vegetables. His father has a small cart that he has been using to sell vegetables to provide for his family. Faisal was 4 years old when he started to help his father. He waited in the morning after the prayer, 5 AM, for his father to bring the vegetables, and then, together, they cleaned, sorted, and bundled them in small portions ready to sell. He said, “Once the vegetables were ready, my father and I went to the streets. From one street to the next trying to sell and make 300 Afs ($4.16) per day.” He continued, “It was very difficult. Some days, I was so tired that I fell asleep on the cart.”

We asked Faisal what he likes to do with his education, and after thinking for a minute, he said, “I want to become a teacher. The kind of teacher who teaches drawing, painting, and art. I want to paint green and beautiful scenery.” We asked him what kind of scenery he wanted to paint, and he responded, “I want to paint a farm with tall trees, a stream running through it, a very clean place with lots of flowers, and some people working in it.”

Together, we can make Faisal's dream a reality. Let's not just admire his painting of a farm but help him have a real farm of his own. His first painting is attached.
