SKILLS FOR ALL

SPELLING BEE PARTICIPANTS

It doesn’t matter how old or young a person is, there is always a skill to be learnt.

Learning a skill helps reduce anxiety, tension, anger, depression and hopelessness. Being able to achieve in something brings confidence, hope and satisfaction. These emotions help in the fight against trauma, which all our vulnerable children have experienced in some way.

Not only does the learning of skills bring a sense of development, but it opens new doors for more capacity to learn other skills.

Each child has a unique capacity for certain skills which may differ to other children.

At Thabang Children’s Home, so many opportunities are offered to cover all the unique and different areas wherein the children have interest.

Sometimes the children are encouraged to take on challenges eg. Joining the Mental Maths quiz and the Spelling Bee competition. These were competitions held within the past three months.

Other children are encouraged to learn ball skills and develop some tennis techniques- some of the children even entered a Tennis Tournament.

Teaching about planting and nurturing vegetables is a very important skill which each child can take back home and into their future.

Teaching children the importance of conservation, is very beneficial for our society. The children learn to appreciate and care for our diverse animals and plants.

Of course, music is a huge and special talent. We provide the chance to play our beautiful Marimba and drums. If the children are disciplined and are team players, then they have a chance to join a special tour where the Marimba team goes away for a week and plays for selected gatherings and explore various parts of our country.  Meeting other people and their cultures and having their eyes opened, is extremely beneficial for development as a young person. During September 2023, the Marimba band toured around the area of Tzaneen, Limpopo. They also visited the Kruger National Park.

At the Drop-in centre, even the guardians of the children who attend this programme, learn a variety of skills once a month. The guardians are inspired to teach the children in their care, because they are taught knitting, sewing, making beads etc.  All these skills help move children and guardians towards entrepreneurial ideas.

It is exciting to watch our children grow in a variety of different directions according to their potential.

We are so grateful to our donors who enable us to offer the variety of empowering opportunities which we do.
