LIFE CHANGING NEWS FOR THE FUTURE GIRL BAKERS

Dear Friends and Supporters,

In November the girls had a month of yoga and dance classes from one of our volunteers to help with their mental wellbeing, making their normally dull days into fun experiences, learning about Yoga and expression through dance.

In December were invited to see the hugely successful TFT Bakery project in action, which is currently giving 72 abused and disadvantaged girls the opportunity to gain a qualification in baking, and as importantly, time out from their oppressive compound.

We were warmly greeted by the Matron, who conveyed how much the girls and staff enjoy baking and eating the different pieces of bread and cakes.

The girls made a traditional Sri Lankan Butter cake and jam buns, just enough to feed 72!

Later that day, a groundbreaking meeting was held with Jetwing Hotels, and they have agreed to offer ongoing training (with accommodation) when the girls leave the institution at 18 years old. This is breaking down age-old cultural stigmas and could be a lifeline to many so-called ‘bad girls’. Many have little choice other than resort to criminal activity or prostitution for their survival.  Statistics say these abused young girls are 500 times more likely to commit suicide. However, there is more to be done in between as they do not have the confidence or life skills needed to take up such an opportunity.

To take this project to the next level, we need to work hard on the girls Mental Health, Wellbeing and life skills. They need funds for resources as well as specialist volunteers in art, play, music, drama, psychotherapists, counsellors, meditation practitioners, careers advice, dance and sports teachers. Please pass on to any interested colleagues and friends who want to help turn around these young girls lives forever.

Thank you again to all our donors for your continued support in helping us to make this happen.

Yours sincerely,

Joel
