Dear Friends and Supporters,
On this Father’s Day, while we celebrated loving and protective fathers, we also acknowledged the plight of six terrified young girls who arrived at the Heartbeat Centre this week. These girls have never experienced the vital role fathers play in ensuring the safety and well-being of their children. Instead, they are victims bearing the scars of childhood abuse, followed by years of neglect and hardship in institutionalised care—circumstances no child should endure.
The moment they stepped inside the Heartbeat Centre, our dedicated team met them with warmth and kindness. New clothing and fresh bedding were provided, giving them a sense of comfort and belonging they had never known. They explored the kitchen, bathroom, and toilet, all of which were new experiences for them. After enjoying a delicious and nutritious meal made with vegetables and fruits from the kitchen garden, the change in their spirits was beautiful. Within hours, their tears and fearful expressions transformed into smiles, and laughter filled the air as they played their first game of cricket together outside in the sunshine.
They arrived like drooping flowers, but it has been an exciting week for the new girls at the Heartbeat Centre. They’ve been getting up at 4 am every morning, scrubbing the floors, cleaning the house, and gathering the leaves in the garden because this is their normal. Their routine, their existence, their entire reality. It’s the only thing they’ve known for their whole lives, and it’s very hard to comprehend that they had no idea of life beyond the bleak and foreboding walls of their orphanages. They are slowly learning to trust the world without fear, laughing, learning, and playing. Above all, they’re enjoying nutritious meals and delicious new tastes from the fridge. In their excitement, they ate a whole week’s food in two days, which is a bit worrying because it’s strained our budget, but it is also heartwarming to see an incredibly positive transformation in such a short time.
This marks the beginning of a transformative journey of self-discovery for these fragile souls. The Heartbeat Centre’s therapeutic programme is designed to mentor, educate, and heal, helping the girls transition into society, employment, and independence. They will be equipped with bank accounts and essential life skills, empowering them to face the world with confidence.
This sanctuary aims to break the devastating cycle that so many care leavers fall into—returning to abusive environments, turning to prostitution or crime, or succumbing to suicide. Here, at the Heartbeat Centre, they are given not just care, but the love and hope they need to build happy, independent futures.
The Heartbeat Centre remains committed to providing a safe haven for these young girls, nurturing their growth and ensuring they have the tools and support necessary to thrive in the world beyond.
Thank you for being a part of our Heartbeat Centre House family. Your support resonates in every smile, every achievement, and every life transformed. Here's to a new year filled with hope, resilience, and dreams fulfilled.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Joel
