How you helped the destitute children in our preschools receive an education

"Education, then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is the great equalizer of the conditions of men, the balance-wheel of the social machinery." Horace Mann.

OBAT's mission is to use education to equalize the conditions that the poverty-stricken camp dwellers and the rest of the people in Bangladesh face. Its preschools are a step towards that direction. Our recent fundraising campaign at Global Giving, in which you generously contributed, was a means to achieve the goal- to spread the light of education in the darkness of poverty.

Thanks to your support, OBAT won the April GlobalGiving Challenge and was successful in raising $4,230 from 52 donors! It has now earned a permanent spot on GlobalGiving and will be able to access this website for fundraising anytime in the future.

This could not have happened without your help! We are so grateful to all of you for your tremendous support and want you to know what a huge difference you make with your generosity.

The $4,230 that we raised till April 30th will help us in paying for the teacher’s salaries which amount to approximately $4,500. Without these teachers, these preschools could not exist. Our total annual cost of running our twenty preschools is approximately $13,000; hence you helped us raise about 32% of the annual cost of running our preschools.

Below, please read about Roshny, one of the children whose life will greatly change with your generous contribution.

Thanks for helping Roshny, a preschooler at OBAT's Chittagong Preschool.

  • The word, “Roshny “means light.
  • This little girl lives in the camps in Chittagong, Bangladesh and attends the preschool there.
  • Her mother passed away four years ago; father remarried, moved away and entrusted his old, widowed mother with the care of Roshny and her older sister.
  • Sony, Roshny’s older sister is a fourth grader at OBAT’s elementary school;  she will not be able to  study beyond grade 5 as her grandmother cannot afford to send her to school.
  • Roshny’s uncle pays her grandmother for their upkeep; he earns a minimal amount, less than $50 a month from his cigarette shop.
  • Roshny lives in a house made out of bamboo sticks and plastic sheets. Both sisters suffer from malnourishment.
  • Her grandmother is bent on sending Roshny to preschool so she can later on be admitted into an elementary school and can light up her future with her name and her will.

Please help us spread the word about OBAT so that more children like Roshny can find some hope for their future.
