Faraz, an 18-year-old boy from the railway settlement of Park Circus in Kolkata, carries with him a story of quiet resilience and determination. He lives in a small hut beside the railway line with his parents and three siblings. His father, a van puller, sells biscuits and cakes to support the family, while his mother manages the home. Together, their family of six survives on a modest income of about 6,500 (around $78) per month.
Life has never been easy for Faraz. Growing up in a rag picker community, the harsh reality of poverty has surrounded him from childhood. Yet, despite these struggles, he has always held on to one thing—his dream of continuing education. Since 2018, Faraz has been part of Tiljala SHED’s Park Circus Education Centre, where he first enrolled in the primary section as part of the very first batch of evening classes. This center became more than just a place of study—it became his support system, his motivation, and his safe space to learn.
Faraz is not a naturally high-scoring student, but he is a fighter. In 2024, he was unable to qualify for the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) examination. For many children in his situation, this failure would have meant the end of schooling. But Faraz refused to give up. With immense courage, he attempted the exam again in 2025—and this time, he succeeded. His determination and belief in himself turned what seemed like a setback into a victory.
Today, Faraz studies in Class XI at Gobra Kazi Nazrul Satabarshiki Shikshayatan School, attending school from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Even with the demands of his studies, he continues to help his father whenever possible, balancing responsibilities at home with his education. His elder sister, also a beneficiary of Tiljala SHED, has already completed her Higher Secondary studies, serving as another inspiration within the family.
Faraz’s story is a reminder that education is not just about marks—it is about courage, persistence, and hope. In an environment where daily survival often takes priority over studies, his commitment to education is nothing short of extraordinary. With the continued support of Tiljala SHED and kind donors, Faraz is not only able to pursue his studies but also to dream of a better future for himself and his family.
Faraz teaches us that failure is not the end—it is just a stepping stone to success. By supporting education, you are helping young people like him rise above poverty and build a life of dignity and opportunity.
