In the heart of the Peruvian jungle, where the Marañón River winds through vibrant mountains and lush vegetation, a remarkable story of hope and transformation unfolds. This is the story of Zela, a dedicated educator and a champion of intercultural bilingual education (EIB), whose journey inspires us all.
Growing up in a community where mothers faced countless challenges to provide their children with basic education, Zela's calling emerged early. She often asked herself, “How can I bring solutions to the community I live in?” With this question in mind, she pursued a career in early childhood education, believing deeply that "to be a teacher, one must have a true vocation."
Zela's path was not without obstacles. Initially, some community members resisted her presence, expressing a preference for an Awajún teacher. However, when Zela spoke their native language, the skepticism melted away, replaced by warm smiles of trust. “The parents loved me,” she recalls fondly. “They felt reassured leaving their children in my care, knowing I understood their culture.”
Today, Zela is a cornerstone at School N°216 in Imacita, a school where Awajún and Spanish-speaking children learn together. Her ability to connect with each student, regardless of their background, is extraordinary. She creates an inclusive environment where every child feels valued and respected.
One of Zela's most impactful initiatives is the creation of a “Book of Stories,” a project that bridges cultures. Through this initiative, Spanish-speaking students explore local wildlife, while Awajún children rediscover their traditional stories and heritage. This project not only enriches the students' learning experiences but also fosters cultural exchange and understanding within the school.
Zela’s leadership extends beyond her classroom. As a speaker in workshops organized by Enseña Perú, she shares her experiences and inspires others to embrace the challenges of EIB. “Teamwork is a big challenge, but I’ve felt an incredible drive,” she says with a smile. “We all work with one goal: to give our best to the children.”
Zela’s unwavering dedication and profound respect for interculturality make her a role model in education. She reminds us that being an EIB teacher is “the art of teaching with true vocation.”
At Enseña Perú, we are honored to support leaders like Zela, who are transforming education in the most remote and diverse regions of the country. Your support allows us to continue empowering educators and building bridges between cultures for the benefit of all.
