‘If you educate a girl, you educate a family, and a whole nation.’ However, still girl’s education is not given much importance.
Given that poverty and lack of quality education are the key factors that lead to a child not going to school, Seva Mandir’s education program has attempted to ensure primary education to out-of-school children through Bridge Schools and Residential learning camps.
Last year, 151 Bridge Schools reached out to 5687 children, 45% of which are girls. In the past few years, the community has become more sensitized towards girl child education; the enrolment of girls in SKs has slowly increased. This is a positive and motivating indicator and shows the efforts put in by Seva Mandir in bridging the gender gap prevailing in society.
10 year old Neha (name changed) lives in the Baghpura village of Girwa block. She lost her mother to illness, and after her father remarried, he abandoned her to live with her maternal uncle, a laborer at a mine in Udaipur. With only the uncle earning, and 4 children in the family, the household is financially unstable. Having never been to school before, Neha came to Udaipur with her uncle and, because of the Right to Education rule, was placed in Class 3 at a government school. She dropped out because the grade was beyond her understanding.
In July 2016 she took admission in our Bridge School. Despite a long walk of 4 kilometers, she was a regular student. Luckily, in September 2016, a new Bridge School was opened in Retda village, only 1 kilometer from Neha’s home. There, she is in Level C and can identify few words and can count to 20. Though Neha is keen to study, she often has to take out time for household chores. She intends to complete her Bridge School education and so that she can seek admission into a higher education facility. Seva Mandir will help her in every possible way to continue her education.
Thank you for your support and for the confidence that you have placed in us. None of this would have been possible without you.
