Send a Child in India to School for a Year

Just like Michelle Obama, we at Seva Mandir also believe that educating girls is the best gift we can give to the community.

Here is a story of a cheerful and enthusiastic 8-year-old girl, Rekha, who joined our Patharpadi bridge school as a student this year. Rekha’s father passed away when she was just 2 years old, and sadly, her mother is handicapped and cannot work to support her family of 5. Rekha’s grandparents cover the family’s income by working in the field or as contract workers, earning only a meagre wage. She does have 3 brothers who are not more than 17 years old, but they had to emigrate to find work in small factories in the neighboring state of Gujarat. Her grandfather, determined to ensure Rekha had a bright future, made her join the school last year so that she did not spend her time doing household chores. Rekha loves to attend the class daily and meet her friends, even though she is faced with a 40 minute walk each day there and back. Her family are very supportive, and they make sure that she goes to the school every day without any problems so that she may continue studying. Rekha is able to express herself at Seva Mandir’s bridge schooland loves to recite Hindi poems alongside a passion for dancing. Rekha’s family reflect Michelle Obama’s words incarnate, investing in Rekha’s education so that she has the best opportunities in life. Seva Mandir, along with the help of its supporters through its bridge schools, enables girls to reach every goal in life.  

We are immensely proud of the improvements we have been able to make in the lives of these children and hope to reach out more children with your continued support.
