One of the key aspects of development is the development of sensory awareness. Whilst most people are aware and comfortable with the environment around them most of the time, others have more difficulty integrating sensory information and need more specific training and experiences to enable them to develop sensory integration. Therefore sensory activities and resources are a crucial part of programmes for students with special needs.
Recently resources were provided at two local centres where students could participate in specific activities to focus on sensory development. The resources included books and toys that focussed on the sense of touch, this not only allows students to become used to a range of textures and it also leads to development of vocabulary for example a student may be helped to understand words such as soft and rough, other resources catered for the sense of smell and also sight. When introduced gently and in the correct context students can broaden their sensory experience.
Support was provided to another centre for students with special needs where a vocational programme is in place. The idea is that students develop skills in such as folding paper to make gift bags. This not only develops the skills of making the bags but provides valuable dexterity and hand exercise for students. These bags can then be sold locally which generates some income for further projects. This experience of being part of an enterprise is invaluable to students. We have been able to support such projects by providing funds for the centre to not only continue their current vocational programmes but also to develop new ideas and challenges allowing the students to expand their skills and experiences.
We thank our donors for supporting this project and allowing this great support for students with special needs and we look forward to further supporting these students with differentiated needs.
