Education for Romanian Village Children

1. A week of learning, friendship and new experiences

This summer, 28 children from our Day Centre in Pechea and from One Village, One Child, our scholarship programme for children from rural communities, participated in a one-week mountain camp.

For the children, it was a welcome opportunity to step outside their daily routines and enjoy a week filled with games, interactive activities, outdoor experiences, movement and creative workshops. Just as importantly, the camp gave them time to make friends, strengthen relationships and simply enjoy being children.

These experiences are an important part of our educational work. Alongside academic and material support, we want children growing up in vulnerable rural communities to have opportunities to discover new places, develop confidence and social skills, and create happy memories together.

2. Preparing the Pechea Day Centre to welcome children back

Our Day Centre in Pechea faced another challenge this summer. Although extensive renovation work was carried out following the severe floods of September 2024, moisture problems unfortunately persisted in parts of the building.

As a result, we had to intervene again this summer, replacing damaged plasterboard and installing new plasterboard along the lower sections of the affected walls.

The work is now almost complete, and we are looking forward to welcoming the children back to the centre very soon. Having a safe and suitable space where they can learn, receive support and spend time together remains essential for the children and families we serve in Pechea.

3. More than 600 children supported with backpacks and school supplies

At the beginning of August, we launched our annual backpack and school supplies campaign, initially aiming to collect 500 fully equipped backpacks for children, most of them living in rural communities.

The response exceeded our expectations.

Distribution has already begun, and more than 600 schoolchildren, as well as seven kindergartens, have received school supplies through the campaign so far. As new requests from rural communities continued to arrive after the campaign started, we are still working to collect 40 additional backpacks for children who need them.

With the new school year beginning on 7 September, these days are dedicated to making sure that as many children as possible can arrive at school with the basic materials they need to learn and participate.
