Bridges to Education: A Future for LUCAS and for all

By ANA PALACIO | EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

In a small, marginalized neighborhood in Medellin, Lucas lived a difficult childhood, having been abandoned by his parents.

Despite adversity, Lucas had always been a curious child. When he came to SUPERARSE, he would spend hours in the library books, dreaming of faraway worlds and different lives. Through reading, he found a refuge. But at the same time, he realized that those dreams would not come true without effort.

Through education, workshops, and extracurricular activities, a spark of hope was lit in his heart. He found himself surrounded by mentors who offered academic support, respect, and understanding. One teacher saw potential in Lucas that he himself had ignored. With dedication and patience, he guided him in his studies, urging him to believe in himself. Don Manuel didn't just teach math and literature; he taught that the past did not determine the future.

Over time, Lucas excelled in his class. The knowledge he acquired empowered him. He went from being a scared child to a determined young man who wanted to change his life. He realized that his dreams were now achievable. He wanted to be an engineer, to create structures that would not only serve the community but also offer a refuge to those who, like him, had known abandonment.

With each exam he passed, his confidence grew. He made new friends, young people who had also faced obstacles but who, together, supported each other to overcome them. He began to participate in scientific competitions and, with each achievement, more doors opened before him.

Finally, with the support of a recurring donor, Lucas entered university to study civil engineering. His dream was on its way to becoming a reality, and not only for him, but for all those who had supported him. He knew that upon graduation, he would be able to help other young people in similar situations, offering them the same support and hope he once received.

After years of effort, Lucas graduated with honors. His heart filled with gratitude toward the people who believed in him, who guided him on his path and pushed him to be more than he thought possible.

Lucas' story is a testament to the transformative power of education. Despite the difficulties, education became his guiding light, the root of his hope, and the path to a brighter future.

With your contributions, more young people will be certain that, even though life challenges them, there was always a way to build a bridge to a new destiny.
